TWENTY

The next morning, Donna called her doctor. She wasn’t big on regular visits other than to the gynecologist, which she felt obligated to do just because that’s what a woman does. But her general practitioner hadn’t seen her in at least two years, and Donna felt that going to the doctor too often was tempting fate. Wasn’t their job to find something wrong with you? Other than being exhausted by work and an occasional urinary tract flare-up, she was great.

Until recently. But still, Donna was without a doubt-positive that these pains were a manifestation of just being overworked and overtired.

Donna surmised, after checking off the litany of possibilities, that she had some sort of infection in her bladder. She could not get sick now. She had far too much to accomplish for something to slow her down. I’ll get sick after Cam and Andie are married, she reassured herself. Right now, she just wanted to get some antibiotics and knock out whatever was going on inside her.

As Donna drove to the doctor’s office, Cam called.

“Hey, you okay? Andie said she called you last night and didn’t hear back,” he said.

“I’m fine. I have a doctor’s appointment this morning. Tell her I’m sorry. I saw her father last night to pick up checks. I didn’t hear the phone.”

“She worries about you,” Cam added. “So do I. You work too hard.”

“I never had anyone whose wedding I was planning say that to me.”

“We’re not ‘anybody’ and we know you do. You’re our friend first. So, I’ll just tell her everything’s okay.”

“Tell her not to worry if I miss one phone call. And yes, I’m fine and I love you guys for caring.”

“Well, you were smart not to pick up. She has someone she wants to fix you up with.”

“Who?”

“Mel Toomy,” Cameron said with a wince in his voice that Donna couldn’t miss.

“Pray tell, what’s the matter with him?” Donna asked, entertaining this conversation to get off the subject of why she didn’t return Andie’s call the night before.

“He’s alright, I guess,” Cameron responded less than enthusiastically, “I just don’t think he’s the right guy for you.”

“I’ll ask again. What’s the matter with him?”

“He’s not funny. He thinks he is but he isn’t. He’s sort of stuck on himself and doesn’t take criticism very well and you’re not one to hold back if you don’t like something,” Cameron answered. “Andie says he’s smart which she thinks is something you would appreciate, but I just don’t see it.”

“But Andie does?”

“She also thinks he’s a ‘gentleman’. I didn’t even want to ask her what that meant because it would have started a big debate. One I’m sure I’d lose.”

“I’m sure you would,” Donna laughed, before adding, “Okay, so, the big shallow question: What does he look like?”

“Andie thinks he’s good-looking…”

“You don’t?”

“You might think so. I don’t know…” Cam sighed, adding, “I think my friend, Doug Marker, would be a better match.”

“Doug Marker? That guy I’ve never seen with the same girl twice?”

“He’s not that bad. He’s a lot of fun and girls think he’s hot.
